About This Item
[Boston]: London: Printed. Boston: Re-printed and Sold at Fowle and Draper's Printing Office, opposite the Lion & Bell, in Marlborough-Street, 1759. 12mo pamphlet (19 cm), removed from sammelband. v, [2], 8-23, [1] pp. 1 publ. ad. A vivid account of hostile encounters with Russian soldiers during the Prussia vs. Austria/Russia conflict in the Seven Year War. Russian troop atrocities against clergy and villagers are described; the author categorizes the Russians into three different sorts: "First Cossacks, they are of a middle size, strong bodied, and of a terrible countenance; they would feign kill one with their looks, and are void of all humanity. They wear a red Polish coat, a short blue waistcoat and upon their bare head a little red cap." Sorge describes in depth the following Cossack arms: a 15 ft. sharpened iron rod, two pistols, a musket, sabre, wide knife, whip and more. And continues with "Second, Callmuks, these are still more cruel than the former; they wear blue, and instead of arms they make use of bows and arrows ... Third, Carcolpaks, these are a terrible people, they are very big, wear grey, and know nothing of shirts. They all serve on horseback, and are as quick as eagles." Includes dedication by unidentified G. W. REFERENCES: American Imprints 41078. CONDITION: Good, minor stains.
