Poujoulat This volumes was owned by Ferdinand Perier, (22 September 1875, Antwerp, Belgium – 10 November 1968, Calcutta, India), was a Belgian Jesuit priest, a missionary in British India, and the third Archbishop of Calcutta (now Kolkata). He was the first mentor of Mother Teresa when she tried to follow her new vocation of service to the ""poorest of the poor"". Perier obtained the permission from the authorities in Rome to allow her to leave her convent, live in a slum and found the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity (1950). The volume has had the cover professionally tipped back in. Very nicely done, you would not notice unless you were looking for it. Half cover front and back with burgundy Moroccan leather, gilt, and marbles paper. Spine is full burgundy Moroccan leather with 5 bands and gilt designs.some bumping of cover boards. Interior end papers are marbled, second page has bookplate for Ferdinand Perier on hand laid paper. Some pencil marks from past book dealers. No inscription. Tissue fly leaf intact over front piece engraving. Very minor yellow beige foxing or lignin staining. Partial palm print on page 106. Each fable begins with a small etching illustration with intact tissue flysheets. Green silk -lace ribbon still intact. Size of book is: 8 inches wide x 11 1/8 inches tall x 2 inches thick
1 volume first edition. Golden head. Very cool interior. 50 illustrations and an etching (portrait of La Fontaine) by V. FOULQUIER. Beautiful copy.
