Tokyo: [The author?], 1897. Oblong 4to, 23 x 31 cm., pictorial title, 18 leaves, 16 of which are illustration, 2 text. A very good copy stitched in the Japanese style in original pictorial wrappers. Stain to edge of front wrapper. Cartoons in Bigot's inimitable style on the subject of Japanese attacks on foreigners, in particular "Heaving a foreigner over a cliff for fun, Kobe" and "L'Affaire de Nikko" in August 1897. Georges Ferdinand Bigot (1860-1927) studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from the age of 12. Enthralled by the Japanese pavilion at the Exposition Universelle of 1878, he went to Japan where he was employed illustrating newspapers and teaching French and watercolour painting. He learnt Japanese, travelled extensively, married a Japanese woman, and returned to France in 1899. Héléne Conevin, De la gravure à la caricature: Le Japon de Meiji vu par G. Bigot, 1990; Worldcat shows one copy only at the National Diet Library

[Tokyo : The artist, 1886]. Large folio (460 x 315 mm), original limp vellum covers with Japanese hand-stitched binding (a little dusty and with light handling wear), with etched title and illustration to front cover and etching to rear; [32] leaves, with 29 original etchings illustrating Japanese types and their costume (although note the final print is small format landscape), printed recto only on Japanese paper, most with Bigot's engraved signature and many also with title in the image; the first etching has the title 'ALBUM'; light foxing to the front and rear endpapers, but all of the etchings and their leaves are in fine condition (some a little pale). An exquisite, sympathetic snapshot of Meiji Japan. French artist Georges Bigot (1860-1927) lived in Japan from 1882-1899. He moved there soon after the beginning of the Meiji era, when Japan was opening up to the West for the first time, and the phenomenon of Japonisme was at its height in France. "Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."
The Sakuteiki, or "Records of Garden Making," was written nearly 1000 years ago, making it the oldest work on Japanese gardening; in fact, the oldest book on gardening in the world! In this edition of the Sakuteiki, the authors provide both an English-language translation of this classic work; and an introduction to the cultural and historical context that led to the development of Japanese gardening. A Japanese court noble wrote the Sakuteiki during the Heian period (794-1184).
