About This Item

London: Printed for R. Baldwin, W. Johnston, and G. Kearsley, 1768. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nicely rebound in green cloth over boards, green leather over spine, sunned to brown and with sharp and distinct gilt lettering to spine, complete and sturdy of interior. Fine, soft paper, minimal rubbing to spine, a bit foxed and mildly toned of interior. His entry in Britannica dot com notes that the playwrite, Hugh Kelly (born 1739, Dublin?, Ireland — died February 3, 1777, London, England) was a "British dramatist, critic, and journalist who was, for a time, a serious rival of the playwright Oliver Goldsmith in the London theatre, after his play False Delicacy (staged in 1768) scored a triumph in opposition to Goldsmith’s Good-Natur’d Man." After emigrating to London and contributing to and even editing literary magazines there he "published a short epistolary novel called Memoirs of a Magdalen" (1767) and then made his mark with His Thespis (in two volumes) then with this play, False Delicacy. 85 [1] pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
