London: J. Rivington, et al., 1773. 363 pp, & Index (35 pp), 12 mo (approx. 7" H), full leather with five raised bands, red leather title label (gilt lettering) on spine. Title page preceded by front free endpaper (no half title page). Title continues: "Wherein is fully explain'd / The Nature, Structure, and Mechanism / of that Noble and Useful Creature, / A HORSE; / The Diseases and Accidents he is liable to, and / Methods of Cure. / Set down in as clear and intelligible a Manner as the / Subject will admit of. / The Use and Abuse of the Science discover'd; whereby / any Gentleman may be able to judge for himself, whether or no he is / imposed upon by ignorant Grooms, and other Pretenders to this Art. / Together with / Many necessary and Useful Observations and Remarks con- / cerning the Choice and Management of HORSES. / Likewise / An Account of Drugs and Mix'd Medicines used in Farriery; / with some Remarkes upon their Genuineness and Adulteration; and their / several Prices, set down Alphabetically at the End of the Work." It appears that, in this case, 'Farriery' refers to all aspects of the horse's health, as only the last few chapters refer to the feet. Examples of other chapters include: Of the Strangles; Of the Staggers; Of Diseases of the Eye, with an Account of its Parts; Of Moon Eyes, or Lunatic Eyes; Of the Glanders, or Mourning of the Chine; Of Diseases of the Stomach and Guts; Of the Cholic; Of the Yellows, or Jaundice; Of the Colt-Evil, and Mattering of the Yard; Of the Dropsy in Horses; Of venomous Bites, as of the mad Dog, &c. in Horses; Of the Lampas, Barbes, Wolves-Teeth, Splents, Spavins, and Ring-Bones, etc., etc. Light toning to pages, a few pages with one or two foxing marks, many pages with a small corner crease/bump - one with a medium crease and one index page with a large diagonal crease, one page with small piece missing at bottom corner, staining to edges of endpapers, some small ink notation on last few blank pages, light to moderate stain in top margin of approx. pages 250 to end of book; boards have heavy edge wear, bumps at corners, are rubbed, have some colour variation; hinge leather is split but front board is holding with bottom three cords and rear board is holding with all cords; heavy browning to edges of text block; spine is scuffed and has small piece missing at top/bottom edges; some minor insect damage on front board and rear endpapers..
