About This Item
1824 1ed GAMBLING Fatal Effects William Weare Thurtell Murder Trial Law Macabre
"They cut his throat from ear to ear,
His head they battered in.
His name was Mr William Weare,
He lived in Lyons Inn."
This fascinating, illustrated work describes the notorious trial of the gruesome murder of Mr. William Weare. On October 24, 1823, following a gambling dispute, John Thurtell and his two accomplices Joseph Hunt and William Probert apprehended and brutally murdered Weare. The culprits would later be discovered and arrested, consequently both the murder and subsequent trial famously exposed the criminal underworld of London to a curious and ignorant public audience causing enormous public interest and media coverage. The latter portion of this work entitled, 'The Gambler's Scourge' offers intriguing commentary regarding the dangerous practices and consequences of gambling.
