London: William Heinemann, 1909. Hardcover. Good. Signed by Author. William Heinemann, 1909; first printing of Popular edition, fifth impression overall; author's signature on slip of paper tipped-in below photo of author on front end page; vi, 335pp.; 12mo (16.3cm x 10.5cm) bound in smooth green leather with gilt design and titling on spine and front, gilt top edge, green ribbon page-marker. Binding is tight, sturdy, and square; text also very good; light edgewear to boards, gilt design on front remains bright and bold; spine lightly tanned and a touch rubbed at head and foot, otherwise gilt remains bold and bright; fly-leafs show some foxing, handsome bookplate belonging to a "W.T. Field" fixed to front paste-down. Gosse's most well-known book, a memoir of the poet's relationship with his fundamentalist Plymouth Brethren father. "This book is the record of a struggle between two temperments, two consciences and almost two epochs. It ended, as was inevitable, in disruption."
