Papyrus was a long running little magazine founded in 1903, well regarded by critics and others, including Ezra Pound. Monahan was noted for his literary and social criticism of American and European culture and literature (see MacLeod, American Little Magazines of the Fin de Siecle, pages 260-262). Single issue, with "The Old Woman" by Ivan Turgenev, as well as work by Leonard Merrick, William Ernest Henley and others. GOOD condition. General toning and minor soiling. Some wrinkling and creasing to the wrappers.

Description:
New York: The International Monthly, Inc, 1915. Magazine. pp36-64, wraps worn and stained with several closed tears at edges, a few pages creased, slightly musty. With an article by Maxwell Bodenheim. Viereck was the immigrant son of a Marxist, a bisexual poet ("Nineveh and Other Poems") and pro-German publisher and editor during 1908-1950s who interviewed Hitler and became a Nazi apologist. "The International" was a pro-German monthly with contributions by pacifists, Free-Thinkers, gay and lesbian writers and artists. Viereck was later the author of the 1952 Men Into Beasts, a memoir of his time in prison which was published as a gay pulp.
