About This Item

Wien, C. Gerold, 1858. Large, thick 8vo (22.1 x 15.3 cm). cxxxvi, 1,017 pp.; two engraved plates. Contemporary half calf over grained boards. Spine with four raised, gilt-lined bands and gilt title. = Second, much enlarged edition of a massive work on the beetle fauna of Austria and the neigbouring countries once belonging to the Austrian empire. Written by the Austrian entomologist Ludwig Redtenbacher (1814-1876), and also translated into Russian. Provenance: with in the lower margin of the title page the oval stamp of Albrecht Blumenzweig (1840-1903), writer for a German-speaking Moravian newspaper who lived in Olomouc (Czechia). Many species names underlined in red pencil - perhaps species found or seen by Blumenzweig, and a few annotations in light pencil. Boards rubbed at edges, rear inner joint weak, but hinges firm, otherwise a very good, complete copy. Horn-Schenkling, 17794.
