[Hammersmith]: The Doves Press, 1906. Limited Edition. Vellum. Near fine. One of 300 copies, octavo size, 261 pp., in German. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German statesman and a prolific writer whose work includes novels, poetry, dramas, and literary criticism; he was an early participant of the Sturm und Drang literary movement and rose to fame early in life with the publication of "The Sorrows of Young Werther". His best-known drama, "Faust", is the story of a man who makes a deal with Mephistopheles in order to achieve whatever he wants; "Faust" was massively influential and the idea of "making a deal with the devil" has been repeated numerous times in subsequent literature, plays, and films. The story of Faust reveals the depths and desperations of human nature in the earthly gamble for fame and fortune. This publication by The Doves Press is Part One of "Faust", the second part being printed in 1910; the German text from the 1887 Weimar edition of the play is printed, bound in beautiful limp vellum by the Doves Bindery. The Doves Press, founded by T. J. Cobden-Sanderson, was entirely self-sufficient, designing, printing, and binding its own books, and even cutting its own typeface for use in its publications; the books it published were often chosen for their typographical challenges, and were designed and printed with a simple elegance that did justice to the works' literary merits and the Press's skill and innovation. ___DESCRIPTION: Full limp vellum, gilt lettering on the spine, fore- and bottom edges rough cut, characters and stage directions printed in red, with titles, acts, and scenes printed in the margins, "The Doves Bindery" stamped in black at the bottom of the rear paste-down endpaper; Doves Roman type, octavo size (9.25" by 6.5"), pagination: [1-6] 7-260 [1 colophon], one of 300 copies, unnumbered. Please note the text is in German. ___CONDITION: A near fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, and the interior clean and bright; vellum is lightly rippled, as is often the case, and shows some natural discoloration, the initial and final half-dozen leaves are showing some foxing, and there are lightly pencilled numbers on the rear paste-down endpaper, likely from a prior bookseller. ___CITATION: Tidcombe no. DP10. ___POSTAGE:  International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Justly famous for the purity of design and exactness of printing, it is always a thrill of sheer delight to hold a Doves Press book in one's hands. The two volumes published separately, Volume I in 1906 and Volume II in 1910. Volume I is one of 300 copies printed on paper (there were also 25 printed on vellum); Volume II one of 250 copies on paper (there having also been 22 on vellum).
