About This Item

Hoaxes 3333 Edited by Jordan, George William and Richardson Little Wright. Feodor Vladimir Larrovitch: an appreciation of his life and works. New York: The Authors Club, 1918, [4], 126, [6] p. (first 4 p. and last 5 p. blank), [9] leaves of plates: ill., facsims., ports. Photographic frontispiece and photographic plates facing p. 81, 93 and 103. Plates facing p. 27 and 49. The colophon states: "This book was designed by William Aspinwall Bradley for the Yale University Press, and executed under his supervision by Norman T.A. Munder and Company, Baltimore

Contributors: William Aspenwall Bradley (Book designer), Authors Club (New York, N.Y.) (Publisher), Norman T.A. Munder & Co (Binder)

A hoax by the 'editors' Jordan (1864-1928) and Wright (1887-1961), claiming to be the translation of poems by an underappreciated Russian poet. The work was taken seriously immediately after its publication in 1918, until a Slavicist noticed the atypical use of the double "r."

Contents:

The personal side of Larrovitch / William George Jordan

Larrovitch's place in literature / M'Cready Sykes

Some translations from Larrovitch / Richardson Wright

Three incidental poems of Larrovitch / George Sidney Hellman

Five Larrovitch letters / Thomas Walsh

The true and false about Larrovitch / Richardson Wright

Talks with Larrovitch / Titus Munson Coan

Toward a Larrovitch foundation / James Howard Bridge

Bibliography of Larrovitch / Arthur Colton

There is a special association to this droll hoax. On the front lining paper is the neat, little bookplate of Jacob Blanck, America's premiere bibliographer (see Blanck's Bibliography of American Literature) with a line through it with a note in Blanck's hand "Cancelled by JB for K S C (?)" I'm sure Mr. Blanck appreciated the attempt to pass of this hoax as a genuine work. Book is in good shape with minor shelf wear that one could expect from a book more than 100 years old. Nice gift for a librarian, bibliographer, Slavic scholar or anyone interested in good fun. $35.00 Box 5678
