New York: The Fire!! Press, 1982. Original wraps. Fine. The first appearance of the facsimile re-issue of this short-lived, highly-influential literary magazine produced in the height of the Harlem Renaissance. Originally published in November 1926, hundreds of copies of the maiden issue of this new Quarterly were destroyed by fire. And coupled with financial challenges which forced the magazine to fold after this one and only issue, copies of the original publication are a prized rarity and the need to reproduce it in facsimile clearly existed. This 1982 facsimile, the 1st edition as such, is in pristine condition. Bright and crisp in its stapled wrappers, which boast dramatic Aaron Douglas designs in dramatic dark and red relief. Apart from Douglas's artistry, also featured in the magazine are the writings of Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Countee Cullen, Wallace Thurman, Arna Bontemps, Richard Bruce (Richard Bruce Nugent), Helene Johnson et al. Also included is the laid-in publisher's Introduction/prospectus, featuring a 1982 reminiscence by "Richard Bruce" Nugent and an informative history by Thomas Wirth of the magazine's publication history and its continuing impact.
