Hardcover, black cloth, gilt lettering with a dancing woman on the front, gilt title on the spine, top edge red (stain on endpapers from dust jacket, corners bent, title on spine faded, owner's name in pencil, cloth on back cover is loose). d.w. (worn, some chipping, bottom of spine is torn (see photo), foxed on inside and soiled on back. The dust jacket is largely intact, except for the conditions noted).
The design of the book and the dust jacket are exactly the same, the book having the dancing woman in gilt, on the dust jacket it is printed in red.
Very good condition (Dust jacket- Good condition). Size: 7 3/4"(19.5cm) x 5 1/4"(13cm).
This is an unusual book and rare to find. The poems were written by an African-American studying medicine at Trinity College, Dublin. The poems represent his perspective of Ireland. Provenance can be provided.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
