About This Item
Paris: Rombaldi, 1935. Leather. Near Fine. 8" by 6". Edouard Chimot. A beautiful limited edition of Charles Baudelaire's collection of French poetry, illustrated with five splendid colour plates by Chimot and bound by Hatchards of Piccadilly. A numbered limited edition on Japanese paper, with only one hundred and fifty copies produced; the number of this example is not quite legible.First appearing in 1857, this is a collection of Charles Baudelaire's poetry. Controversial upon publication, with many poems censored due to immorality, it is now considered a classic of French poetry, relating to eroticism, decadence and death. This edition contains five original illustrations in colour by Edouard Chimot reproduced in heliogravure. Chimot was a French illustrator and artist, who illustrated works for such figures as Pierre Louys, Magre and Paul Verlaine, as well as bringing together numerous other writers and artists and creating important collaborations.Collated, complete. In the original French language.Bound by Hatchards, Piccadilly. In a half crushed morocco binding. Externally very smart; spine is a touch faded as to be expected with ink of this colour. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are just a touch age-toned at the edges. Near Fine

So much has been written about these poems - and about this book as a cycle - that the only further help on the subject which I can offer to my fellow readers is a quotation from one of my teachers: "The Twentieth Century began in 1857." He didn't explain, and he didn't have to.
