About This Item
Bristol: John Wright and Sons, 1912. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 5.5". Not Stated. A first edition copy of this work on flora in Bristol, written by James Walter Wright, the personal copy of the Fry family, notably Agnes Fry, of Bristol. Containing three plates and a folding map, collated and complete. A comprehensive and fascinating work of local Bristolian topography relating to plants, flora, and ferns. Including introductory sketches, notes on the origins of flora, distribution of local plants as affected by rocks and soils, and other interesting information for Bristolian botanists. Written by James Walter White, former lecturer on systemic botany at the University of Bristol. The personal copy belonging to the Fry family, in particular Sir Edward Fry and Agnes Fry. Sir Edward Fry (1827-1918) was an English Lord Justice of Appeal and a Quaker, his family being a prominent family in Bristol and Somerset. Most fascinatingly, this copy also belonged to his daughter Agnes Fry (1869-1958), a bryologist, astronomer, and botanical illustrator, who gave Failand House to the National Trust. This copy contains the bookplates of Edward Fry and Agnes Fry to the front pastedown. It also contains some ink notations to the half title pages, and some loosely inserted Fry family ephemera relating to botany. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart and rebacked, with the original cloth laid down. Spine is slightly darkened, and there is a small split to the cloth at the head. Bookplates of Edward Fry and Agnes Fry to the front pastedown. Ink notations to the half title page, and on the odd page throughout. Internally, binding is generally firm throughout. Pages are generally bright and clean. Very Good
