[The Magnificent Greek Flora]

Translated into Greek by S. Rhizopoulou. Hard cover, 25x22 cm, 192 pp., ill.; net weight 990 gr.

A unique treasure that few have ever seen! Flora Graeca Sibthorpiana: The rarest and most valuable book on Botany refers to the Greek flora. John Sibthorp, Professor of Botany at the University of Oxford and inspirer of Flora Graeca Sibthorpiana, along with the Austrian artist Ferdinand Bauer, toured in the late 18th century the prerevolutionary Greece. Dream life, purpose and effect of the plant collection (Sibthorp knew the work of Theophrastus and Dioscorides), the exceptional 966 watercolors of plants and marvelous landscapes. All original material is preserved today in the Library of the Department of Plant Sciences, at the University of Oxford, where the public has no access. John Sibthorp died young and never saw his work published. Colleagues and friends, fulfilling his will, completed the first edition in 10 volumes (London 1806-1840), but printed only 25 copies! In this book Stephen Harris describes the adventures that led to the creation of Flora Graeca Sibthorpiana and highlights the wonderful watercolors by Ferdinand Bauer.
