This is a hugely important early flower book printed in between 1611-16. One of the most stunning flower books of the 17th century, it contains pictures of peonies, irises, sunflowers, and more exotic plants of America (cactuses) and the East (Ginger and Pineapples). The images were derived from the contemporary flower books of Vallet, Besler and van de Pas.

The collation is not straightforward as the work was published in 5 different stages, The first publication of 1611 contained plates 1-54, the second in 1613 plates 55-79, the Third in 1614 80-90, and the fourth in 1615 91-114. Parts were often sold separately and this copy contains the complete second and third parts, and sections of the first and fourth parts. These separate sections can be seen by the text headings on plates 55 and 91 for parts 2 and 4.
A rare opportunity to obtain this beautiful flower book which is over 400 years old and contains 54 plates in an original vellum binding.

[London]: G. Brookshaw, 1812. Aquatint engraving, with some stipple, printed in colours and finished by hand. In excellent condition with the exception of a small mended tear on the top right margin not affecting platemark. Image size: 17 3/8 x 13 inches. Gilt frame. A fine image from Brookshaw's masterpiece "Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits," the finest work on fruit and flowers ever produced. Its breathtaking images display a level of technical virtuosity and beauty that distinguish this magnificent aquatint as a true work of art. Brookshaw published this seminal botanical study late in his career, at first publishing it in parts and then as a complete edition in 1812. The fact that this outstanding work took ten years to complete is evident in the quality of its images and the care with which Brookshaw executed each individual picture. Pomona Britannica was produced as a visual record of the best available varieties of fruit in an attempt to encourage gardeners to… Read More

Chrysanthemum cultivation came to Japan from China in the 8th century and the flower was later adopted as the Emperor's crest. (The name Keika is usually a woman's name.) Active in the final years of the 19th century, he also produced books of patterns for kimono and washi paper such as Biko Zukan (Art Book) 1894, and Kyoka Zuan (Patterns of Kyoto), 1897.
