Barefoot, stripped down to cotton shorts, I walk in shadow and in sand that retains the warmth of the midday sun.

About the author

Born in South Carolina, Buck went west with all the young men and became a committed believer in love at first sight. His initial extended hike, a month along the Escalante River, was extended even further by taking a turn up the wrong canyon.
For more than 22 years he's been traveling around Utah via foot and paddle, covering too many thousands of miles to ever remember it all--but cherishing the multitude of trails that he can. In Utah, more than any other place, the heart of the earth seems laid bare, and traveling there touches his heart. In the wilderness he feels at home in body and soul. He wrote about his experiences, and the process of writing rooted the journeys deep within his spirit.
For Buck, writing is an act of reliving the experience on a profound level. But the words gathered dust on many an editorial desk, so he took to teaching. Focused on education, and writing on the side, his tales started finding space in magazines, and now more than 1,000 articles of his have found ink--not to mention two dozen books.
If he could do it all again, he would.
