Author Howard Thomas was my mother's history teacher in Suffield, Connecticut, during the early 1930s. He mentored her and saw that she went on to a liberal arts college when her father preferred she aspire only to nursing or secretarial work. Her keen mind thrived away from home. Years later when I was a young teen, we took a ride into the Adirondacks, where my mother introduced me to retired teacher and active writer Howard Thomas; we visited him in Prospect NY. From 1950 through 1973, he published 10 volumes about Adirondack regional history. Two of these chapters had been published in Liberty Magazine in the 1940s. The tales herein are arranged into 7 sections: Roads, Streams, Sawmills, Folks, Murder, North Woods, Fiction.
