About This Item

x+126 pages with frontispiece and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with pictorial boars and dark brow lettering to spine. First edition.

Intended for compilers or retellers of folktales, for storytellers or librarians serving children, or for children themselves, the annotated bibliography contains references to 152 sources of North American Indian folktales. Sources in the non-comprehensive bibliography were selected on the basis of (1) a statement of sources and faithfulness to them; (2) a true reflection of Indian cosmology; and (3) a written style that retains the spirit and poetry of the Indians' native manner of telling. The bibliography is divided into 12 sections. The first contains references to 23 sources (studies, anthologies, children's anthologies, bibliographies, indexes) that present the overall picture of North American Indian mythology and folklore. The other sections present sources for 11 North American culture areas: Eskimo; Mackenzie; Plateau; North Pacific; California; Plains; Central Woodland; Northeast Woodland; Iroquois; Southeast; and Southwest. Each section contains a brief introduction to the stories characteristic of the area, followed by a list of source books and a list of children's editions. The entries are arranged in alphabetical order by author. Entries contain author name, title, and publishing information, plus a detailed annotation. The bibliography is illustrated in black and white, and indexes the entries by author, title, and tribe.
