DESCRIPTION
Beautiful Gift book by W H Bartlett in a lovely binding which describes the scenes, typography and travels of our Lord and His apostles from the New Testament Narrative. Frontispiece, decorative title, title page, iv, 2, map, 237, 1, 16pp ads.
23 tissue guarded steel engravings including map executed by C. Cousen, A. Willmore, W. Hughes, J. C. Bentley, E. Brandard, after drawings by W H Bartlett.
24 Wood-cuts to the text by Branston, also after Bartlett. All plates and wood cuts present. The ads are historic and well executed with 7 additional engravings within them.
The book cost 26 shillings in 1852.
BINDING
Super-royal 8vo. Full morocco leather, extra fine binding.
Spine has 5 Raised Bands enclosing 5 gilt panels and the gilt title panel.
Front and rear boards have both gilt and blind embossed decorations.
Inner boards have yellow paste downs / endpapers and gilt dentelles.
All edges gilt.
CONDITION
Very good. Minor rubbing to binding and a few age marks from handling over the last 170 years. Inner and outer hinges remain firm & un-cracked. One tissue guard has a tear and one has a significant crease. In all, a very nice well preserved book. The first fly leaf has a neat pen inscription as follows :-
