Ford, is addressed to "My dear Winter", who is theater critic William Winter. John T. Ford grew up in Baltimore, and managed theaters along the east coast including those in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. William Winter was a theater critic, biographer, poet, and essayist and wrote influential reviews for several New York City papers. Ford refers to a newspaper clipping he attached to the letter. The clipping from the Baltimore Sun refers to a theatrical strike in Baltimore and the famous actor George Curtis Fawcett Rowe, best known for his portrayal of Wilkins Micawber from David Copperfield. A nifty grouping of theatrical history linked to Abraham Lincoln's tragic fate.
