About This Item

London: Constable, 1947. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good+/Very Good+. John Piper (dust jacket and frontispiece). Small 8vo. Pp. xi, [2], 3-501. With a postscript by the author. Bound in plum cloth with author's monogram in gilt on front board; title block in gilt on spine. Spine just a touch sunned; bookseller tag on front pastedown (Collets, Hempstead). In the illustrated dust jacket, spine darkened but price remains intact on front panel. A follow-up, of sorts, to the author's Fanny by Gaslight, inasmuch as the Victorian underworld is depicted with accurate verisimilitude. Sadleir's historical view was informed by his scholarship of Victorian literature, and pursuits in Victorian bibliography. He and his father were also keen art collectors, and are credited with introducing Kandinsky, and especially his theories of abstract art, to the West. As such, and as a publisher at Constable, Sadleir's choice of John Piper as dust jacket and frontispiece illustrator (image is repeated), should be taken for full value. Dust jacket is now protected in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
