Description

Francestown: Typographeum, 1993. Limited private press edition. First edition.. Hardcover. Fine copy. 8vo. Black cloth. Printed label on back-strip (spare label tipped in). Pp. 60. Frontispiece, 4 mounted plates. 125 copies hand-set, printed letterpress and bound by R. T. Risk. Issued without a dust-jacket. This memoir recounts visits made by the author to four interesting private presses in 1973. The Castlelaw Press was in the Scottish village of West Linton and was run by Alex Frizzell, a much loved bookseller. The Mélissa Press, at Draguignan in the south of France, was operated by Count Potocki of Montalk, a distinctive if controversial individual. The Officina Bodoni, at Verona, Italy, was the private press of Giovanni Mardersteig. And the Cuala Press at Dublin, Ireland, was still being run by members of the Yeats family. The memoir also touches on why the author sought out these printers and how they influenced him.
