New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1877. Hard Cover. Good binding. Octavo. 199 pp., frontis. First edition. In publisher's green cloth with title and embellishment in black and gold. Rubbing and fraying to the head and tail of the spine as well as the corners; light soiling; front hinge has been discreetly and securely mended; rear hinge a little tender but holding; minor chipping to the edges of both free endpapers; previous owner names on the front endpaper, one, Walter H. Doyle is contemporary and dated "Dec. 1877" and again on the recto of the frontis; foxing to frontispiece and title page, otherwise large clean. Despite the cover wear, the book presents fairly well. "A basic, valuable source on the character of Lee and the strength of the Army of Northern Virginia" CWB I, 167. Howes T-74.
