Important Civil Rights Association Copy. James Armsey, ( 1918-2008) was the Ford Foundation executive who oversaw grants to universities and colleges in the 1960s, with the only requirement that they had to raise matching funds from other sources. At his urging the Foundation added the requirement that the colleges and universities could not bar black students. This change caused a number of them, including Duke University, Vanderbilt University, Emory University, Tulane University, and several major private colleges, to admit black students for the first time. The "Board" referenced in the inscription was Ford Foundation Board for the Advancement of Education. Ralph McGill (1898-1969) was an…

Description:
Signed. Near Fine. Softcover. The late R C Hickman became a professional photographer after WW II. He made a visual record of the black community in Dallas, Texas for 3 decades. He worked for the Dallas Star, Jet Magazine and the NAACP. There are 109 mostly full page black and white photographs. He got photos of important celebrities when they came to Dallas: Martin Luther King, Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Louis and Thurgood Marshall to name a few. His photos of regular folks are the best though. Congresswoman Barbara Jordan wrote the Preface and said, "These are images of the ordinary lives of extraordinary people". The book is in near fine condition with only very slight shelf wear. The dust jacket has a crease on the upper left front. The pages are clean and unmarked, and the corners are square. The author has dated and signed on the title page (no inscription).

Description:
Bricks Without Straw, A Novel. By Albion W Tourgee, Author of "A Fool's Errand" etc. New York: Fords, Howard & Hulbert. 1880. Believed to be first edition. 'A classic of American political fiction first published in 1880, a mere three years after Reconstruction officially ended, Bricks Without Straw offers an inside view of the struggle to create a just society in the post-slavery South. It is unique among the white-authored literary works of its time in presenting Reconstruction through the eyes of emancipated slaves. As a leading Radical Republican, the author, Albion W. Tourgée, played a key role in drafting a democratized Constitution for North Carolina after the Civil War, and he served as a state superior court judge during Reconstruction. Tourgée worked closely with African Americans and poor whites in the struggle to transform North Carolina's racial and class politics. He saw the ravages of the Ku Klux Klan firsthand, worked to bring the perpetrators of Klan atrocities to justice, and…

African American males have never fared as poorly as they do currently on a number of social indicators. They are less likely to complete high school than their white male and female or African American female peers, they are more likely to exhibit depressive symptoms, and they have fewer sanctioned coping strategies. Arguably, no other group in American society has been more maligned, regularly faced with tremendous odds that uniquely threaten their existence. When they do receive education, mental health, and physical health services, it is often in correctional settings. They are marginalized in public policies on secondary and higher education attainment, marriage and parental…
