Pages are clean and tight; book appears as if unused. Illustrated with dozens of marvelous color photos. Franz Kafka [1883-1924] was a leading literary figure in the early 20th century. Prague, the great medieval city, had for centuries been one of the great European centers of Jewish learning and culture. When Kafka was born in Prague it was a city of 300, 000 residents. "It can be said...that the most important single factor, which, in Kafka's time, affected the life of every Prague citizen was his place in the complicated, precarious coexistence of the city's three ethnic-religious components: the Czechs, the Germans and the Jews. For nobody....could stay aloof from that entanglement". This book is a collection of photos of the Prague that gave birth to, and housed, Kafka through most of his short life. Each photo is captioned with writings from Kafka. ; Photographs; 8 1/2 x 11; 92 pages; Cover has very slight edgewear. 1999 printing. .
