Padova (i.e., Padua): Pietro Paolo Tozzi, 1610. First editions. Very Good. Two titles in one volume. 12mo (16 cm); 82, [2]; 82, [2]. Both titles within elaborate engraved borders (the first an architectural border with putti and figures, the second showing the emblem of the Accademia dei Fecondi); woodcut initials and ornaments. In early plain pastepaper boards. Text block untrimmed, preserving deckle edges. Occasional light damp stains.
References: Michel I, 254, #4 and #11; Bruni & Evans, Italian 17th cent., #314;
First editions of two works by Count Giovanni Battista Arrigoni (sometimes spelled with one R, Arigoni) of Padua, member of the Accademia dei Fecondi and founder of the Accademia degli Avveduti (sometimes spelled with one V, Aveduti). In the wake of Tasso's Aminta and Guarini's Il Pastor Fido, the composition of pastoral musicals spread fast through Italy's creative salons, organized as "Academies." The Accademia degli Aveduti, founded and directed by Arrigo, boasted the membership of the notable Tuscan composer Gaspare Torelli, and it is almost certain that Torelli composed the music for Arrigoni's pastoral play Il Fraterno Amore (Brotherly Love), published here with a dedication to Cosimo II de' Medici.
The second work, with its own title page and pagination, is the first edition of a collection of 133 baroque poems (under the stylistic influence of Giambattista Marino) dedicated to Cardinal Odoardo Farnese. True to form, the poet presents complex, highly-wrought linguistic curlicues to such mundane subjects as his admiration for a lady with blond hair to an account of an escaped pet dog. Printed at the end are six poems dedicated to Arrigoni himself by members of the nobility, the last two of these in Greek and Hebrew respectively.
Although the two works are commonly catalogued separately, it should be clear that they were intended to be issued together, as a single publication within one binding, as in the case of the present copy.

Description:
1624 BIBLE Biblia Sacra Tremellius Junius OT Theodore Beza NT + Apocrypha Latin In 1565, French Protestant Theodore Beza issued an edition of the Greek New Testament with the Vulgate. His translation of the New Testament would become extremely important and popular throughout Europe, especially among Calvinists. According to many scholars, Beza's interpretation of the text, along with his translation, were extremely helpful to theological scholars who came after him.
This 17th-century Biblia Sacra features the famous Beza New Testament as well as the Junius & Tremellius Old Testament Latin translation. The Tremellius-Junius Bible, an important Reformed translation, was very influential on Reformation dogmatics which helped shape Protestant theology in the 18th-century. According to Fletcher, the pairing of these two translations are often found printed together. It features the Junius Apocrypha and a preface of Andrew Marvell (Andreas Rivetus).

Henry Hammond [1605-1660] was a churchman, preacher, and Royalist sympathizer during the English Civil War. As a theologian, he produced several sermons and religious tracts, and compared texts of the New Testament in his book, "Paraphrase and Annotations Upon all the Books of the New Testament" [1653].

London: London: printed for J. Nourse, at the Lamb, opposite Katherine-Street, in the Strand, 1746. 1st Edition . Full leather. Very Good. First edition, octavo; xvi,232pp, with full complement of 34 engravings, 33 of which are folding. In contemporary unlettered full calf (a little worn with minor loss to board corners, sometime skilfully rebacked in matching leather), five raised spine bands, internally clean with only the lightest of occasional dust staining. Muller was deputy head of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where he was instrumental to its transformation into a disciplined cadet academy. An attractive first edition example of his first work. Laurence Sterne possessed the text in second edition, with possible influence on Uncle Toby and Corporal Trim's obsessions with fortification in The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy. The parable of the sovver and of the seed. Declaring in foure seuerall grounds among other things: 1. How farre an hypocrite may goe in the way towards heauen, and wherein the sound Christian goeth beyond him. And, 2. Description:
This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages.This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.
This particularly edition of Claudian's poetry includes a life of Claudian written by Giglio (here identified as Lilio) Gregorious Giraldi (1479-1552) taken from his work on the… Read More

This is a First edition thus of the "Quatrième Edition, revue & considérablement augmentée", printed in 1780. New articles are starred (*) to differentiate from those which had appeared in previous editions of this momumental work. This a complete 12-volume set, with each volume between 500 and 600 pages. Later bindings are still tight and text remarkably free from foxing, fading or other blemishes, BUT it is in places rather heavily underlined in pencil and/or ballpoint. This concerns maybe 1% of the text and does not impact its readability. See photos.
