About the author

About the Authors All four of Joseph S. Lieber's grandparents emigrated from Eastern Europe at the turn of the century, settling in New York City, where he was born and raised. Mr. Lieber lived in Hungary in the early 1990s, teaching English and researching the first edition of this book. He has also worked as a curator, taxi driver, ski bum, and encyclopedia writer, and is presently practicing law in Boston. Christina Shea attended Kenyon College and received her MFA in creative writing from the University of Michigan. Ms. Shea served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Hungary. Subsequently, she directed Peace Corps language-training programs in Lithuania and Kyrghyzstan. Her first novel is forthcoming in the fall of 1998 (St. Martin's Press). Erzsebet Barat was born in Kunhegyes, a small town in the Great Hungarian Plain. She currently lives in Szeged, where she is an associate professor of English at Attila Jozsef University.
