An 1876 first edition of Bret Harte's only full-length novel, which is a romance set against the backdrop of the California Gold Rush. Bret Harte (1836-1902) was born in Albany NY but moved to California as a young man where he worked as a newspaper man. He wrote many popular stories and poems and later served as a diplomat in Europe. With 33 engraved illustrations by unstated artist(s). --- In full light brown cloth-covered boards with titling and decorations to covers and spine in black and gilt. --- Loosened hinges have been carefully reinforced prior to this listing, and with prior owner's signature to front paste-down, along with some small tears to gutter areas of first few leaves and dampstains to edges of many pages. Overall, a tightly-bound, well-preserved copy of this work by Mark Twain's contemporary and sometime friend.; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; 467 pages .
