Description:
New York: The University of the State of New York State Museum, 1916. Reading copy with much wear and tear. Full page color plates by L.A. Fuertes. Marginalia lovers dream. It appears that the owner of this book used it to document in almost diary form throughout book what appears to be more than 20 years of bird watching from 1931 to 1953 with dated notes throughout: on blank pages, reverso of plates, etc, even laid in sheets. Book has numerous flaws with serious wear and tear to cloth covers. Cloth is peeling from front boards and there is a split the length of front spine. Shaken. Multiple sheets laid in front of book were cello taped and are now loose and the cello tape has left a dark stain. There is evidence on about six pages in front of insect or rodent nibbling on bottom corner (these are actually laid in lone pages, not pages from the actual book.) The color plates are bright but some have fingermarks or light foxed spots, at least one page has ink transfer from the previous page.…

ABOUT THIS BOOK: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you're not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as "majestic" and "noble," yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. Taking us from before the nation's founding through inconceivable resurgences of this enduring all-American species, Jack E. Davis contrasts the…

ILLUSTRATED COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF ADAPTATIONS OF BIRDS FOR BREEDING BY EXPERT ON DARWIN'S FINCHES. 10 inches tall mauve cloth binding, gilt title to spine, unmarked, very good in good price-clipped dust jacket with edge tears. From dust jacket: "The primary aim of this book is an interpretation of the main adaptations of birds for breeding-whether a species lests solitarily or in colonies, whether it is monogamous or has several mates, the lumber of eggs that it lays, the relative size of its eggs, the rate of development of its eggs and young, and the age at which it first breeds. This book is the first comprehensive survey of these points that has been made, so readers can see what is known, and what emains to be discovered, and hence may be stimulated to add to knowledge. Description:
Rising from sandbars on the Platte River with clarion calls, the sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) feels the urgency of spring migration. Elegant, noble, and spiritual, the sandhill crane is one of the most ancient of all birds. More than a half-million strong, flying in squadrons, these majestic creatures point northward to their Arctic and sub-Arctic breeding ranges. Theirs is an epic story of endurance through the ages. With 153 stunning color photographs, On Ancient Wings presents sandhill cranes in their wild but increasingly compromised habitats today. Over the course of five years, Michael Forsberg documented the tall gray birds in habitats ranging from the Alaskan tundra, to the arid High Plains, from Cuban nature preserves to suburban backyards. With an eye for beauty and an uncommon persistence, the author documents the cranes' challenges to adapt and survive in a rapidly changing natural world. Forsberg argues that humankind, for its own sake, should secure the cranes' place in the future.…
