About This Item

London: Macmillan, 2003. Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 9 1/2" x 6", xxii, 394 pages, 5 maps, 5 black and white illustrations as chapter headings, 41 black and white plates. A personal and moving biography of a formidable soldier and misunderstood statesman. 'Galloper' Jack Seely, Brough Scott's grandfather, was at the heart of some of the most important events of the first part of the twentieth century. His early life was one of adventure, sailing to the antipodes, saving the crew of a French ship wrecked off the coast of the Isle of Wight and later raising a squadron and joining the Boer War, where he was awarded the DSO for his bravery. On his return to England he was elected Conservative MP for the Isle of Wight, but just like his close friend Winston Churchill, later crossed over to the Liberal party. Later, forced to resign, Jack was sent to the Western Front and there made his name as a humane and innovative leader. Hb, near fine in dw; dw has creasing at the upper edge of the rear side but is otherwise near fine. Loosely inserted are two newspaper cuttings, one a letter with a colour illustration of General Jack Seely on his horse Warrior, painted by Sir Alfred Munnings, the other a full-page illustrated article from the Sunday Telegraph in 2008, by Brough Scott, on Seely's magnificent horse, Warrior. .
