About This Item

1st UK edition, without dust jacket. Slight reading crease and fading to spine with small bump to lower front fore edge corner, internally clean.
The novel is set in Moscow at the time of the Battle for Moscow in 1941/2. It is not a war "Action" novel but is set behind the front lines in Moscow and is told through the eyes of a Polish Jew who has enlisted in the Russian Army. It highlights the antisemitism in both the German and Soviet troops and the Russian population at the time. A highly moving account based very largely on the author's experience. Mann himself was a Polish Jew who fled to the Soviet Union from Nazi occupied Poland and became a teacher prior to enlisting in the Soviet Red Army.
