About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. Gawayne and the Green Knight, originally, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a late 14th century Middle English valiant love story. It is among the most popular Arthurian stories, with its scheme coalescing two kinds of folklore ideas, the decapitation contest and the trading of takings. The Green Knight is decoded by many as a depiction of the Green Man of folklore and by some as a hint to Christ. Written in stanzas of repetitive verse, each ending in an assonance bob and wheel, it ties on Welsh, Irish, and English tales, and the French knightly custom. It is a significant poem in the variety of romance, which predictably implicates a hero who goes on a pursuit which tries his valor, and it continues to be famous today in modern English versions from J. R. R. Tolkien, Simon Armitage, and others, and over film and stage reproductions.

It portrays how Sir Gawain, King Arthur's Round Table, accedes a dare from an unexplained Green Knight who defies any knight to hit him with his hatchet if he will seize a revert clout in a year and a day. Gawain agrees and executes him with his axe, and the Green Knight rises, picks up his bloody head, and retells Gawain of the agreed time. In his scuffles to preserve his deal, Gawain proves nobility and courage until his credit is interrogated by a dare with Lady Bertilak, the lady of the Green Knight's castle.

The second version consists of 4 Cantos: The Green Knight, Elfinhart, Gawayne, and Conclusion.

Charlton Miner Lewis repeats the story of Gawayne and the Green Knight in 1903 as an enchanting fairy tale of epic sonnets. Charlton presents the lady Elfinhart whose step mother in the land of pyxies plans to dare Gawayne to ascertain him desirable for the love of Elfinhart.
