(Boston; New York): (S. Walker; Thomas Kinnersley), 1823. Hardcover. Good. Two volumes: vol. 1 is printed and published by S. Walker (Boston, 1823); vol. 2 is published by Thomas Kinnersley (New-York, 1823). Translated and with explanatory notes by William Whiston, revised by Samuel Burder. Quartos. Both volumes are bound as a matching set in contemporary full calf with dark-red morocco spine labels lettered in gold, gilt spines, the boards are ruled in gold within bind tooled borders, marbled endpapers. Presentation copy to Lucy W. Sabin of Williamstown, Massachusetts, with her signature in ink on the front fly leaf of vol. 1 (dated June 4, 1834). Each volume with a title page printed in red and black. With 20 engraved plates: vol. 1 has 15 plates (including the frontispiece portrait of Josephus and one folded plate); vol. 2 has 5 engraved plates (including the frontispiece view of Jerusalem). Rubbing to the board edges, marbled endpapers a little loose at the hinges, some scattered tears and creasing, modest dampstains on some page corners, good or better. An early American edition featuring engravings by John B. Neagle and T. Kelly, bound in a handsome presentation calf binding.
