The Greek astronomer and geographer Claudius Ptolemy lived in Alexandria in the 2nd century A.D. He wrote eight books including all previous geographical knowledge and his own observations. This manuscript, lost for centuries, was discovered in the 13th century in Constantinople and it was considered as the key text for geographic science. The copy of the manuscript yielded several copies, two of which are included in this release. The oldest one (codex 655) is a property of the Holy Great Monastery Vatopedi at Mount Athos and dates back to the late 13th or early 14th century. The other one (15th cent., codex 388) is the manuscript edited by the philosopher and cardinal Bessarion and belongs to the Marciana Library (Venice). This book contains a facsimile reprint of these two codices.
