About This Item
August Friedrich Leopold Weismann was a German evolutionary biologist. Fellow German Ernst Mayr ranked him as the second most notable evolutionary theorist of the 19th century, after Charles Darwin. This book establishes the difference between the reproductive cells that carry heredity and the body cells that do not. It established that lifestyle changes or experiences of an adult organism do not affect heredity. Modern research has modified these conclusions somewhat, but the basic ideas are still accepted.
