Dutton of Émile Zola's 1885 novel, set in the coal mines of northern France. Per Donald Ross, this is a ". . .tale of strikes, starvation, hate and love, riot, disaster, flood and assassination." Translated, and with an introduction by Havelock Ellis. An entry in the Dutton Everyman's Library series, #897A. Sharing the text with the more widely-distributed UK-produced Everyman's Library editions, this American version was only distributed in the US, the Philippines, Cuba and Mexico. --- In blue cloth-covered boards with gilt-stamped spine and cover titling & decorations on black blocks; pale orange topstain. Volume lacks the dust jacket. --- A well-preserved copy: tightly-bound, unmarked and clean, though with slight wear to edges of cloth.; 12mo (7 to 7-1/2 in. tall; xii, 558, (1, ads) pages .
