New York: Charles Scribner's Sins, 1948. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. Clarence John Laughlin. An unusually affecting work of art, an unusually scarce copy in the trade in this state (stated First Edition, with "A" at copyright page) and overall quite good condition. Between 1936 and 1941, while the photographer, Clarence John Laughlin, was a photographer for the U.S. Engineer Office in New Orleans, made over 4,000 negatives of outstanding iron-work designs, statues, and old buildings of New Orleans. Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound, internally clean hardcover copy, with unbruised tips, neat and tidy paste-downs; not ex-library, with neither highlighting nor underlining. Light scuffing to spine head and foot, along edges, very light waffling to text-block initials, very short crack to front joint at top, previous owner's inscription at half-title, else tightly bound and unmarked of interior. Dust jacket present, illustrated, showing moderate wear, two inches of lost at front upper tip near spine, and with a couple of short closed tears, protected by a plastic coat, price-clipped. Fairly arresting double-page black-and-white photographed endpapers. List of Illustrations (all 100 of them). Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
