Author signed to title page; and, gift inscription to fEP. History of a mining town and men. The story of Jerome, Arizona by Cleopatra Hill. Today a historical site with museums and galleries, was once a notorious mining town. Established in 1883, it was such a hotbed of prostitution, gambling, and vice that in 1903 the New York Sun declared the town to be "the wickedest town in the West". Decline in mining of copper, gold and silver and merging new concepts of workers' rights propelled Jerome back into news headlines for labor disputes culminating in highhanded mass deportation of union members and miners known as the Jerome Deportation and the Bisbee Deportation, both of 1917. As mines retracted and closed, population of Jerome dropped from 15,000 in 1929 to near 50 people in the late 1950s. Biography of a town of extremes. Author Herbert V. Young was resident of Jerome, and also served in the executive branches of both United Verde and Phelps Dodge.
