Evanston, Illinois, U.S.A.: Harper and Row Publishers 1964, First Ediiton Thus First edition, first state, without dust cover. We've put the book in a reprinted, replica true first dust cover with Mylar cover, so that it makes a lovely presentation. This is a matte finish (not glossy) hardback in very good condition, there is slight scuff mark up in the upper right corner of the front cover, perhaps a slight sticker mark, but it's minimal. It has typical edge wear, as to be expected for a book its age. But again, it's light wear. Otherwise it is very clean both inside and out. It shows Shel Silverstein as the copyright holder on the back side of the title page in 4 lines of text. Overall it's simply a wonderful copy. It would be ideal for a gift or presentation. Text is clean and unmarked. Again, no original dust cover, but we're including a reprinted replica (waist up portrait with curly hair on back) of the first in clear Mylar protector. -- About the story: The Giving Tree is an American children's picture book written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein. First published in 1964 by Harper & Row, it has become one of Silverstein's best-known titles, and has been translated into numerous languages. This book has been described as "one of the most divisive books in children's literature"; the controversy stems from whether the relationship between the main characters (a boy and the eponymous tree) should be interpreted as positive (i.e., the tree gives the boy selfless love) or negative (i.e., the boy and the tree have an abusive relationship). -- Extra photos are available upon request.
