About This Item

Et forføg i den experimenterende Psychologi auf Constantin Constantius. (Repetition. An Essay in Experimental Psychology). C.A. Reitzel, Kjøbenhavn, 1843. 1 blank leaf + TP + [3]-157 + 1 blank leaf, 12mo. First Edition (Himmelstrup 53)."A pseudonymous aesthetic work, published on the same day as Fear and Trembling. Lowrie viewed 'repetition' as the most important and most puzzling term in Kierkegaard's vocabulary. It is associated with natural repetition, with the young lover's futile efforts to repeat particular experiences, and with the stories of Abraham, who receives his son back, and of Job, who receives everything back. But as Lowrie notes, for Kierkegaard, such physical repetition matters only insofar as it may lead to an intuition of repetition as a religious category, 'a movement in virtue of the absurd' through which the individual achieves a second, higher 'immediacy'".
