About This Item

Chicago, IL: Reilly & Lee Co, 1920. FIRST PRINTING. Hardcover. Very Good. John R. Neill. First State in publisher's green-cloth variant with full-color pastedown to front board. Gift inscription to the "This Book Belongs To" page . 9 in. x 7 in. with listing down to Glinda of Oz, on half-title page. 279 pp.

Black and white endpapers and twelve full-color plates by John R. Neill, without captions. Light rubbing to extremities. A fairly early copy in the first state print run, as later copies of the first state showed type damage to a six-line swathe near the top of p.150 - two words only, slightly lighter than those surrounding . Clean and tight. A lovely copy of one of the first posthumously issued OZ books, sadly issued before the author would get to see the rising post-war success of his wonder-filled tales.

Synopsis

Glinda of Oz is the fourteenth Land of Oz book written by children's author L. Frank Baum, published on July 10, 1920. Like most of the Oz books, the plot features a journey through some of the remoter regions of Oz; though in this case the pattern is doubled: Dorothy and Ozma travel to stop a war between the Flatheads and Skeezers; then Glinda and a cohort of Dorothy's friends set out to rescue them. The book was dedicated to Baum's second son Robert Stanton Baum.
