Calibrated full brass meridian ring.<br/> <br/> Outstanding eighteenth century Swedish globe with Rococo cartouche and unusually tall 20th century custom built library stand. The globe, in original color, is the rare first edition of 1766 and does not include the later updates of Cooks travels and exploration of Eastern Australia. A giant Sea of the West or 'Mer de L'Ouest' is shown in the Pacific Northwest. Reported from indigenous sources, and noted by Juan de Fuca, a giant sea between 47 and 48 degrees, the sea was thought to lead to the East Indies. Some repairs and restorations. Overall a beautiful example. The Cosmographic Society was formed in Uppsala, Sweden in 1758 and was intended to be a public service to develop and manufacture accurate maps and globes. Anders Akerman (1723-1778) was head of the Cosmographic Society, a globemaker, geographer and engraved the globe gores. A wonderful rarity.<br/> <br/>
