About This Item

Newcastle: Hodgson for Chanley, 1825. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 8" by 5.5". None. An annotated author's proof copy of John Trotter Brockett's glossary of northern dialect, with a letter from the author tipped in. With a letter from the author to Robert Davidson tipped in following the proof copy title page, Brockett thanks Davidson for procuring the work "Sunderland Acts" and stating that he will send a copy of "the enclosed" once published. With a proof title page, remarking that the work is 'preparing for publication', dated 1824, followed by the title page of the first edition, which was ultimately published in 1825.Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece of the author.Blank leaves are bound in between each leaf of text, a small number of which feature proposed corrections, or alternative definitions, in the author's own hand.An attorney by profession, Brockett was a dedicated antiquarian with an interest in philology, printing, and book collecting. This is a fascinating work gathering together a glossary of the dialect used in the north of England in the early nineteenth century. Rebound in cloth, with original straight grain morocco boards and back strip with gilt detailing laid down. Externally, exceptionally lovely. Endpapers renewed. Internally, firmly bound. Signed letter tipped in. Pages generally clean and bright, with scattered light handling marks, and the odd instance of concentrated spotting. Annotations to a small number of blanks. Very Good
