About This Item

Sidgwick & Jackson, London, 1917. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Sidgwick & Jackson, London 1917. First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 71pp. Blue cloth with a tanned, chaed and partially illegible paper spine label, and a pristine spare tipped-in at the rear, as called for. Free endpapers fractionally spotted, and with just a little bruising to the backstrip ends. A very good copy. No dust wrapper. Fifty-three poems, the author's second book. Frederick William Harvey, "the Laureate of Gloucestershire", was born in Hartpury, Gloucestershire and educated at the King's School, where he formed a close friendship with Ivor Gurney. He joined the 5th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment, four days after war was declared, and won the Distinguished Conduct Medal in August 1915. Harvey was captured in August 1916 while carrying out a reconnaissance patrol and spent the remainder of the war as a POW. His first book, 'A Gloucestershire Lad At Home and Abroad', was published in September 1916, shortly after his capture. 'Gloucestershire Friends', his second collection of verse, includes several war poems in addition to the celebrations of his native Gloucestershire, and was written in various prisoner-of-war camps, principally Gütersloh, and sent back to England for publication..
