Jacket edgeworn and a bit rubbed, with several archivally closed (on verso) edge tears and one wide chip running along the bottom edge of the front panel (triangular, 8½" wide X 1¼" at left side narrowing to ¼" at right side) -- fairly attractive overall despite obvious flaws. A tight, nice first edition of this scarce first photo collection by the reknowned New York and Chicago photographer (1903-91), who pioneered abstract expressionism in photography. Though not so noted, from the collection of noted Midwest photographer Archie Lieberman (1926-2008), author of "Farm Boy." A handsome copy of this desireable title.

Pictorial dust jacket. The book is clean with some edgewear, the text block is a bit loose. Dust jacket is complete and bright if a bit soiled. Dust jacket has several small tears near the folds and along its edges where a previous owner has "repaired" them with clear scotch tape. Overall a good and complete copy of this fascinating photography book. "I've tried with whatever power I had to make this picture of imprisonment as distressing as it is in reality. 1915. Limp suede album (measuring 21 cm x 14.5 cm) with burned floral design reading "PHOTOS" on front cover. Covers laced at the spine with a leather thong. Fifty-five 3.5" x 2.5" sepia-tone photographs pasted in. Included at the rear are three real photo postcards (one loose), and a small clipping from an advertisement. Handwritten label on front pastedown states: "My Trip to Lake Tahoe with Mr. & Mrs. Pauline Seigfried. July 2, 1915. Dorothy Federspiel." Minimal wear. One finds records of a Dorothea Federspiel living in California during this time frame. She would have been fourteen at the time of this trip. This Dorothea Federspiel married a Martin Anderson and is buried in Napa Valley. The first ten photos have handwritten captions in the bottom margins; the remainder are unidentified. Over half the shots feature people, while the others are scenic.
