About This Item

Caldwell: The Caxton Printers, Ltd., 1968., 1968. First edition. First edition. Thick quarto. Cloth, xiii [3], 466 pp., A Note To The Reader, acknoweldgments, profusely illustrated with nearly 300 illustrations, notes, bibliography, index. "The most complete treatise of early mining in the west that I have examined. As good historians, they correct some of the false history that has been written about this subject. They deal with such California outlaws as Tom Bell, Joaquin Murieta, Tiburczo Vasquez, Black Bart, Three-Fingered Jack Garcia and Jack Powers. They have some material on the Montana vigilantes, including material on Henry Plummer, Boone Helm, Joseph Slade, and others. They also touch upon Billy the Kid, Wild Bill Hickok, Soapy Smith, Bob Ford, Jack McCall, and Jesse James. Among the noted females they include Calamity Jane, Cattle Kate Watson, and many of the better known prostitutes of the west. They go to some length to correct some of the drivel that has been written about Wyatt Earp. This is a large, heavy book, but well worth the effort and strength to read it through."---Ramon Adams. Fine in dust jacket. Co-author, Opal Laurel Holmes, was the wife of Vardis Fisher, and apparently a renown recluse. Laid-in are 3 different 2-page announcements that appeared in The Idaho Statesman at the time of her death in July, 1994, giving much interesting information regarding Vardis Fisher and his wife.
