A first edition copy of this work of adventure and mystery fiction by Max Pemberton, which follows the dramatic events witnessed by Dudley Hatton, illustrated throughout by Maurice Greiffenhagen. First Edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece and twenty-one additional black-and-white plates by Maurice Greiffenhagen (1862-1931), a British painter and Royal Academician. This is a wonderful work of fiction by Max Pemberton, which follows the dramatic events taking place in and around Draper's Gardens. This novel includes interesting characters such as Dudley Hatton, Lady Hermione, and Patrick Foxall. Chapters include 'The Market and the Life', 'The Shadow of Fate', 'The Pathos of the Doubt', and 'Confession'. Written by Max Pemberton (1863-1950), a popular adventure and mystery novelist. Pemberton served as the editor for the boys' magazine 'Chums', and well as 'Cassell's Magazine'. This best known work is 'The Iron Pirate'. With an ink inscription to front endpaper and title page, belonging to F. M. Dais Kingslyn. With two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of the text. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart. Light bumping and wear to the extremities and the head and tail of spine, as well as along the joints. Fading to the spine and rear board with a few marks. Age-toning to the endpapers, with an ink inscription to the front endpaper. Light spotting to text block. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean throughout, with light age-toning to the margins of text and the odd spot. The illustrated plate between page 128 and 129 has fully detached from the binding, while the plate between 106 and 107 is beginning to detach from the bottom of the binding. Ink inscription to the title page. Very Good
