Map illustrated endpapers, both different, front end paper: – showing Shanghai in 1940, rear endpaper: – showing China in 1937. The text is illustrated with black and white photographs and the occasional reproduction of documents. Black coloured boards with author's 'chop' embossed to the front panel and orange and white coloured titles to the backstrip. Photographic dustwrapper with dark red, black and white coloured titles to the front panel and dark red and white coloured titles to the backstrip. Black and white photograph of author to the front fold over panel. The biography of the author who grew up in the city of Shanghai, and, as the rear panel blurb states "... During his seventeen years in Shanghai, Sam (the author) experienced balls, changing regimes, different currencies and a variety of schools that reflect the evolving political landscape. In a world obsessed with conflicting nationalism, his family survived as stateless residents, neither beholden to, nor the responsibility of, any country. They were instead, sustained by the Russian Jewish culture and community." -- from the rear panel blurb. Minor rubbing of the book corners and backstrip corners.
